Planting a tree properly is not hard, but unfortunately planting it poorly is even easier. Here are some basic guidelines to follow.

These tiny little flies can wreak havoc on a cherry harvest, and they are especially fond of sour cherries. So much for that cherry pie!

That tree’s purpose in our landscape will set the objectives. With fruit trees, there are often two objectives in a landscape setting. First, we want an attractive tree adding aesthetic enjoyment to the view. Second, we want fruit production, and not necessarily too much. Production orchards are pruned for production with little concern for aesthetics.
- [Pinyon Needle Scale](https://legacytreecompany.com/pinyon-needle-scale-2/): Drought stressed pinyon pines are sitting ducks for pinyon needle scale insects, which can significantly damage an already drought-stressed tree.  The scale insects are easily seen as tiny black bumps on the needles near the branch tips (see photo, bottom left).  Heavily infested trees will have very bare branches with only tufts of needles at the tips.  In fall, the males fly down and hide at the ground surface and overwinter there, while the females stay in the little black shells until mating in late winter.

Trees have evolved to insert themselves into the flow of water from soil to air and they need that flow for their systems to work. How much water does a given tree need? That is a very hard question to answer, as there is a huge range of variables in the equation, like time of year, wind speed and air temperature. So instead of calculating gallons, think in terms of coverage and depth. Tree roots take in water like sponges, not straws. The water needs to be spread across a lot of surface area, not concentrated in a few spots. Water is absorbed into tiny young roots in the soil underneath and beyond the branches. Try to water both inside and outside an imaginary line at the edge of the branch tips (a.k.a. the dripline). Slowly apply enough water to wet the soil down to about a foot and a half deep.  We recommend setting up drip tubing systems. Drip tubing consists of poly plastic irrigation tubes with engineered, built-in emitters spaced evenly down the length. The tubing can be laid out in spirals, long curving lines, or grids to cover the surface of landscape areas of almost any shape. An official non-profit, launched in 2016, coordinates and organizes all this community service. Larger firms in the industry provide sponsorship, funding the staffing and supplies needed. Arborists from many companies participate, not only donating time to a great cause but also meeting old friends and making new ones. The tree worker community is not a large one, and events like this really build camaraderie across company and regional lines.

These are often larger beetles, including the giant root borer (Prionus heroicus) adult pictured above – one of North America’s largest beetles. Their grubs live underground, feeding on tree roots. Large trees are not damaged, but young trees may suffer a lot from root loss. Interestingly, for a hungry looking beetle with big jaws, the adults don’t feed at all. They mate, lay eggs and fade away.

An understandable, if unwarranted, reaction to seeing one of our largest wasp species, the cicada killer wasp (Sphecius speciosus). This solitary, ground nesting wasp sports yellow-on-black body coloration, with translucent amber wings. They look like everyone’s nightmare wasp.
- [Bur Oak](https://legacytreecompany.com/bur-oak/): If you are looking for a large shade tree to plant (assuming you have enough space for that!), a great option may be the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa). Also known as the mossy cup oak, this tree is native to moderate-rainfall area in North America, from the eastern edge of the Great Plains and east into the upper Midwest.

- [Technical Tree Climbing](https://legacytreecompany.com/technical-tree-climbing/): Technical tree climbing is a challenging aspect of professional tree work. It is physically demanding while also requiring a lot of thought. Ropes and hardware allow the climbing arborist to get into a tree and then move to the part of the tree that needs work (pruning typically but also cabling and bracing). Climbers get lots of training in how to set up a rope system, how to ascend and move about in the tree, and how to then do hard physical work while aloft.
- [Twig Beetles](https://legacytreecompany.com/twig-beetles/): Twig beetles look and act like miniscule bark beetles. However, instead of attacking the main trunk, they destroy vascular tissues in the small diameter twigs, typically twigs small enough to still have needles. Where the beetles feed, the needles dry out, turn tan and then drop off. The bark peels off in a powdery puff of tiny tunnels under the bark. The tree can look “frosted”, with the damage showing up somewhat randomly in the canopy. Left unchecked, the tree will be killed.

- [Scale Insects](https://legacytreecompany.com/scale-insects/): Have you ever wondered about the shiny, sticky (and sweet, if you’re willing to go that far…) residue found on some tree leaves and cars parked under those trees? Basically, it’s evaporated sap. How it gets there is interesting. Certain insects, mostly found in the order Homoptera, have mouths that resemble needles. They stick these needles into whatever food item they want to eat and proceed to suck life juices from that food. Some feed on plants, taking in sap. Plant sap is full of sugars, but the insects mostly want nitrogen, so most of the water and sugar passes out the back end in a fine mist – we call it honeydew. Some homopterans, known as scale insects, settle in one spot for most of their lives. They often create a protective shell to hide under, making it hard to target them with insecticides. Like many pests, just a few are not a problem at all. Sometimes a weakened tree can’t put up any resistance and they overrun the tree, further debilitating it. We often see scale on hawthorns, plums and other stone fruit trees, oaks and elms, as well as other species like the mimosa pictured above. Systemic insecticides can be effective controls, but we won’t treat insect-pollinated or fruit-producing trees; it would be ecologically irresponsible to do so. Predatory insects help us manage scale insects. Landscapes that provide habitat for those insects have few scale problems, though scale insects are present. Even Siberian elm and tree of heaven struggle when not watered at all! Certainly, the more desirable trees species will need irrigation to survive and grow in this hot desert region.

It turns out, the answer is not so simple (of course!). Trees have limited ways in which stress is shown, and leaves are at the front of that. - [Codling Moth](https://legacytreecompany.com/codling-moth/): Apple growers beware – the season approaches for codling moths.  Adults are small, about one-half inch long, and grayish brown with a coppery color on the wing tips. They are very hard to spot on the tree. Eggs are laid on the new fruit, and from these emerge little caterpillars. These larvae feed inside apples (and crabapples and pears), causing the core and adjacent fruit flesh to get all brown and gross. What can be done about these pests?

This brief time in the hopefully long life of the tree is one of the most critical life events it will face. You see, planting trees is not natural to them – the naturally grow from a seed, and they naturally never move. Also, when root systems are confined by a container, they can grow into a balled-up tangle.

These little guys are actually crustaceans (more precisely, isopods), more closely related to lobsters and shrimp than to insects! Their very hard shells, combined with their habit of rolling up in a ball, protects them from many predators (though not the sow-bug killer spider – see picture above).
