UNM Tree Campus

UNM Tree Campus
As April dawned, so did a new day for the University of New Mexico. Earlier this year, UNM was designated an Arbor Day Foundation Tree Campus – Higher Education. Similar to the Tree City designation, this award is based on showing that the institution has a structured and thoughtful tree care program with key funding and oversight components. UNM joins two other institutions (San Juan College and Western New Mexico University) to become the third such Tree Campus in the state. The trees on the UNM campus have been in good hands for many years, and it shows. All of the thoughtful work that happened over the decades culminates with this recognition and has involved many committed folks, from the arborists to the landscape architects, from department heads to university leadership.
In conjunction with this significant award, UNM is developing a campus-wide arboretum. A number of curated tree walks are in development, guided walks through the beautiful campus to see trees that are good climate-ready trees, or are unusual and interesting specimens, or tie to the history of UNM itself, or are culturally significant to our indigenous peoples and histories.
On April 1, 2025, at 12:30 pm, a formal recognition ceremony was celebrated on the campus. Top administration officials spoke about the value of this important award and applauded the work it took to bring this dream into reality. Following the formal statements, some people took advantage of the tree tours and learned more about this great part of our urban forest.
