Technical Tree Climbing

Recently, one of our certified arborists volunteered at the annual tree climbing championship hosted by our local chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), which is the Rocky Mountain Chapter and includes New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. Climbing arborists from all four states gathered for a couple of days of friendly competition and great comradery. The winners from this competition will compete at the national level, and those winners will compete at the international competition to be held in New Zealand this year.

Technical tree climbing is a challenging aspect of professional tree work. It is physically demanding while also requiring a lot of thought. Ropes and hardware allow the climbing arborist to get into a tree and then move to the part of the tree that needs work (pruning typically but also cabling and bracing). Climbers get lots of training in how to set up a rope system, how to ascend and move about in the tree, and how to then do hard physical work while aloft.

Not all tree work requires climbing, but it is often the best way to access the right part of the tree canopy, and sometimes it’s the only way to do so! With familiarity comes skill, with skill comes grace and efficiency of movement. Watching really good climbers is like watching three-dimensional dancing, or like seeing someone swim through the air. It looks easy, smooth, even effortless – and it’s anything but. Kudos to those who can do this work!
