Saluting Branches – Arborists Honoring Veterans
This past September, on the third Thursday, arborists from around northern New Mexico gathered at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, to honor the veterans buried there by donating a day of tree care efforts to spruce up the trees growing on the grounds. Legacy Tree Company is proud to have participated, sending up full crews and trucks loaded with equipment to participate.
The effort, named Saluting Branches, is a nationwide event that takes place on properties dedicated to US armed forces veterans. Begun in Minnesota over a decade ago, the day of volunteer work and celebration touched about one hundred properties this year, across the country and even overseas. An official non-profit, launched in 2016, coordinates and organizes all this community service. Larger firms in the industry provide sponsorship, funding the staffing and supplies needed. Arborists from many companies participate, not only donating time to a great cause but also meeting old friends and making new ones. The tree worker community is not a large one, and events like this really build camaraderie across company and regional lines.
This year, our crews focused on taking down large trees that were in bad shape. These trees could have dropped branches that might have broken headstones, or even hurt people on site visiting remembered family and friends. We used the work as a training day, allowing less experienced crew members to try out new skills and office staff a chance to experience the physical nature of tree work.
