Vetting Your Tree Care Company
There are some important things to consider when choosing a company to do work on your trees. Often, folks want the work done fast, well and cheap. There is an old saying that you can get any two of those, but not all three. So – what are you paying for when you hire a service company?
First – do they know the work? Can they precisely identify why the proposed work needs to be done? Do they answer your questions with relevant details or vague brush-offs? Do they have certifications and qualifications?
Can they do the work? Do they have the equipment, tools and staff to accomplish the tasks? Does the equipment appear well maintained? Are workers using appropriate personal protective equipment, such as hard hats, googles, and hearing protection? If workers are not taken care of…will your trees be?
Finally – are they properly insured? Tree work involves large, heavy masses moving above ground. Accidents happen, unfortunately. If there is damage to your property, do they have full liability coverage? If a worker is hurt, do they have full worker’s compensation coverage? Outfits that hire off the books and pay their workers cash don’t have this coverage, which is very expensive and built into the cost of work. In the case of a medical issue, you are legally considered the responsible party and will face huge financial liability. People have lost their homes paying for medical bills of an injured, uninsured worker hurt on their property – don’t let that happen to you!
