Did you know that we honor two Arbor Days here in New Mexico? National Arbor Day is this month, celebrated on April 24. Because New Mexico is seasonally ahead of the national curve, we also celebrate New Mexico Arbor Day in March.
Arbor Day is a day on which we celebrate trees in our lives, typically by planting trees but in many other ways as well. This originally American holiday began in 1872, on the windy and largely treeless plains of the Nebraska Territory. By 1882, the tradition of planting trees on Arbor Day was well rooted across the nation, and today the holiday is observed in all states and many countries around the world (www.arborday.org).
Among the Arbor Day festivities in Albuquerque this year are tree walks that will be held on the UNM campus. Led by staff and volunteers, these tours wend through the campus to stop at specific trees of note. Tree nerd conversations will ensue. Legacy Tree Company will have one of our Board-Certified Master Arborists, Joran Viers, helping with these tours. To find our more, go to https://sustainability.unm.edu/engagement/events.html .
Viers will lead another tree tour through the UNM campus on Monday, May 4, starting at 5:30 in the afternoon. Using the tour maps UNM has produced, the tour will take in some of the nicest trees in town and talk about the what’s, whys and how’s of trees. To sign up for this limited-space tour, call (505) 308-1387.
