Trees are big plants, with lots of leaves. This means that they use a lot of water – that is a basic biological equation that can’t be fudged. How and where that water is given to the tree matters a lot when it comes to how well the tree can use the water.
Plants take in water very differently than animals do. Most animals have a single opening through which we drink – our mouth. We only have one, and all the water we need comes into our bodies via the mouth; we can drink through a straw and still get what we need.
Plants take in water through tiny, young roots that absorb soil moisture. In effect, they have millions of little mouths, spread diffusely through the soil. Any one or few of those absorbing roots can be lost and the system still works. Roots take in water like a sponge, not like a straw.
What matters to the tree is the volume of water it has access to. That is determined by the volume of soil that is holding water, and that in turn is determined by the soil surface area directly receiving and infiltrating water. What does that mean in practice?
Proper tree irrigation provides for broad, and deep, water infiltration where the absorbing roots are. Legacy Tree specializes in tree irrigation systems, and we target those absorbing roots. Have us assess your irrigation – we may be able to improve the system to better provide what your tree needs.
